Rural area retail inflation highest in Maharashtra
It was lowest at 534 points in Tripura for retail inflation for rural workers, the data showed.

Shimla: The government on Friday said that the rate of inflation for rural workers moved up in a majority of states during January, with Maharashtra witnessing the highest level of price rise and Tripura the lowest.

As per the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) number, released for the Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers for January 2012, the index of inflation for rural workers recorded an increase in 14 states and a decline in six states.

Maharashtra, with 683 points, topped the index table, whereas it was lowest at 534 points in Tripura for retail inflation for rural workers, the data showed.

The overall country-wide retail inflation level, measured in terms of CPI number for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers for the month, dipped to 4.92 per cent and 5.27 per cent respectively.

The inflation rates for agricultural and rural labourers in the previous month, December 2011, stood at 6.37 per cent and 6.72 per cent, respectively.

The food inflation levels for agricultural and rural labourers were much lower at 0.33 per cent and 0.50 per cent, respectively, during January 2012.

The retail inflation index for farm workers was highest in Maharashtra at 690 points, whereas it was lowest at 514 points in Himachal Pradesh.
