VELLORE: The death of a school student sparked off protests on Wednesday. Sharmila, a 15-year old student of a Government HSS in Pennathur was run over by a truck used by stone quarriers while on her way to school Wednesday morning. Seriously injured, she was rushed to a private hospital in Vellore where she succumbed.Over 200 students from her school blocked the Vellore–Amirthi road for over half an hour on hearing of her death. Vellore Taluk police rushed to the spot and pacified the agitated students who demanded a ban on movement of quarry trucks during school hours.Inspector Raja said the truck driver Palani (27) of Naganadhi village was arrested and later remanded. After an autopsy, the girl’s body was handed over to the family in the evening. Relatives and others assembled on the Vellore–Arni road asking for closure of stone quarries and crushing units in Chitteri, Ariyur and Thuthipet. Vellore tahsildhar Murugan rushed to the spot along with the police and assured them of action.Stone quarries around Pennathur area have been using trucks to transport stones to support construction activity in the fort city.
