New Delhi: The 10-day Ganesh Utsav comes to an end on Sunday with the Ganpati Visarjan. Lakhs are expected to take part in the Ganesh idol immersions, especially across Maharashtra and Gujarat. Coming in the backdrop of the Delhi blast, security has been tightened in major cities with more CCTVs installed in important locations.
In fact, with a terror threat looming in Ahmedabad, major procession routes have been barricaded.
In Mumbai, a special police team will keep a close watch on those who leave unidentified objects during the Ganesh immersion on Sunday.
"If anyone drops any unidentified object and this group notices it, the person concerned will be immediately caught," a senior police official said.
"The object he/she dropped would be checked in front of that person. In case anything suspicious is found, appropriate action would be initiated against him/her," the official said.
Police fear that terror suspects may plant explosive laden objects during Ganesh immersions because of which the special team has been formed.
The team to keep a watch on suspicious objects is among various police squads which have been formed and assigned different tasks to ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of the festival, the official said.
On Sunday, 4,158 sarvajanik Ganesh idols and 27,530 household idols would be immersed at 88 idol immersion points at various beaches of Mumbai, police said.
Earlier, three simultaneous blasts on July 13 at Zaveri Bazaar, Dadar and Opera House had killed 27 people in Mumbai. Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) suspects that six persons had planted the explosives at the blast sites.
