NEYYATINKARA: It’s advantage Selvaraj. T P Chandrasekharan’s murder has put an aura of a ‘could-be martyr’ around Congress candidate Selvaraj in Neyyatinkara. Eager to redeem the candidate’s new-found status, the UDF camp has already unleashed a major campaign that the rebel leader, who opted out of the CPM thereby throwing the party into a major embarrassment, could face Chandrasekharan’s fate if he fails in the bypoll. “There are rumours that the party, on getting an opportunity, would not spare Selvaraj. This campaign has been found to be highly effective among a section of voters, particularly the fear-stricken housewives, who have been repeatedly exposed to the violent death of T P Chandrasekharan in the visual media,” sources pointed out. They added that the campaign is active in Left strongholds and certain pockets in the constituency where CPM candidate F Lawrence expects an upper hand. The issue has impacted the constituency, opined senior Congress leader and former MLA Thampanoor Ravi.”For the intellectually sharp and educated electorate in the state, the brutal killing of Chandrasekharan is unacceptable. Initially when Selvaraj made the revelations nobody believed. The CPM has chosen to silence an ideological issue by the use of weapons. Though we have not been playing up the issue, it will reflect in the poll results,” Ravi pointed out.Riding on the sympathy wave, the Congress has already shifted its poll strategies. However, the LDF camp accuses Selvaraj of being opportunistic. “Selvaraj knows that he can cash in on Chandrasekharan murder and they(Congress) are using it to the maximum,” sources said. Though there is such an attempt on the part of UDF, it won’t yield the desired results, said senior CPM leader M Vijayakumar. “The UDF has started such a campaign, as it has nothing else to say. But it’s not going to have any impact on the voters. The UDF, which has been desperate without any specific agenda, has used this as an opportunity,” said Vijayakumar.
