Service charge in restaurants not imposed by government: IRS
IRS association joint secretary Saurabh Kumar said, "No legal provision for service charge exists as per the law of the land. The biggest remedy for consumer is to drag the restaurant to the consumer court".

CNN-IBN's Why pay Extra campaign has been appreciated by the Indian Revenue Services (IRS). Taking to its official Facebook page and Twitter handle, the association explained that service charge was not a government imposed levy.

IRS association joint secretary Saurabh Kumar said, "No legal provision for service charge exists as per the law of the land. The biggest remedy for consumer is to drag the restaurant to the consumer court".

He also advocated policy intervention seeking more clarity on the issue. The posted message also says that implementation of Goods and Service tax (GST) will put an end to all such multiple taxes and consumers will only be required to pay one tax.
