YANAM: The small sub-jail in this town of Puducherry, enclaved within Andhra Pradesh, is suddenly filled with detainees involved in the violence at Regency Ceramics on January 27. With widespread arrests and surrenders taking place in the past few days, the subjail has become overcrowded, causing inconvenience to prison staff as well as inmates. As of now, 43 prisoners, including 34 accused relating to the RCL incident are being kept at the small jail. The sub-jail built at a cost of Rs 1.80 crore was set up in 2010 and has a maximum capacity of only 24 persons, including six female detainees.Three persons serving life terms and six under-trials were already lodged before the recent spurt in the number of prisoners.According to sources, one sub-inspector and 15 warders have to be appointed for the jail. But only six warders and one in-charge officer are working at present. With the steady stream of inmates, the prison staff are struggling to keep everything in check. "We are working extra shifts to meet the situation," a warder said. It is learnt that steps are being taken to shift some detainees to the Rajahmundry Central Jail as more arrests are likely in connection with the RCL case.It must be remembered that major violence took place at the Regency plant on January 27, in which company president (Operations) KC Chandrashekhar was lynched after a union leader Murali Mohan died after alleged police action. It was followed by arson and looting in the premises of the tiles company and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Yanam police have registered five cases against 1,083 accused in connection with the violence. The cases are related to murder, rioting, arson, looting and unlawful assembly which took place in the RCL premises. "Five cases were registered relating to the violence at RCL and a total of 34 arrests and surrenders have taken place so far," said inspector N Periyasamy.
