Pathankot, Punjab: Spurned in love, a student in Pathankot killed his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her in full view of a shocked classroom.
Jasbir Singh of Chejali village stabbed his classmate Monika several times in front of other classmates and teachers on Tuesday, police said.
Both were students of the same class in the bachelor of education (B.Ed) course in S D College, 250 km from Chandigarh.
Monika died on way to hospital.
After the incident, Jasbir locked himself on the roof of one of the buildings in the college and threatened to jump from there.
The police surrounded the building and were able to persuade Jasbir to come down only after local units of the army came to help. He was taken into custody.
Other students of the class said that Jasbir was upset with Monika in recent weeks after she spurned his marriage proposal. They said the two had had an affair earlier, but Monika started avoiding him after she learnt that he belonged to a lower caste.
This angered Jasbir and he purchased a knife. When the students gathered on Tuesday to submit their project reports to teachers, he picked up an argument with Monika. He then pulled out the knife and stabbed her several times on the chest and abdomen.
