THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If things materialise in favour of the Education Department, BEd students here would be lucky enough to teach in Brazilian schools in the near future. The officials of Pernambuco, a Brazilian state, have expressed the desire to collaborate with Kerala and a bilateral agreement might be signed between the two states during the visit of the Brazilian President to Delhi next week in this regard.A Brazilian team had visited IT@School in the first week of February and was keen to adopt the ICT-enabled learning in English and Mathematics. According to IT@School officials, the team wanted some 100 teachers to be deputed to schools in a municipality in Brazil to handle the IT tools. To hold more talks in the subject, Education Secretary M Sivasankar and IT@School Executive Director Anvar Sadath had left for Brazil. The idea is to recruit teachers from Kerala to teach Mathematics and English through ICT tools at 40 schools in Pernambuco state.“The discussions even progressed to having an Indo-Brazil Center of Educational Excellence which would be beneficial for both the country. In short, the Kerala IT@School is spreading to a big country which is 5th in size and by population ( 20 crore) and occupies 6th position in GDP globally. This is the greatest recognition that IT@School project has received so far,” said Anvar Sadath, Executive Director of IT@School, in an e-mail from Brazil.A statement from Education Department said that the Secretary of State of Pernambuco had informed that a bilateral agreement would be reached probably at the BRICS - which is the international political platform of leading emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - meeting to be held in Delhi. The Kerala team visited Timbauba, the municipality which has been chosen for a pilot programme of the same. It was suggested at the meetings that instead of deputing teachers to individual schools, it is better to pool them and provide a centre which could offer the training as a supplementary input. The press note said that the teachers would be provided accommodation and food by the local government.
