New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday hinted that the agitation against the Tata car project in Singur will continue till the land was returned to farmers.

''We will give our lives and force the government to return to farmers the land taken forcibly. Peace will return only after they return the farmland,'' PTI quoted Banerjee as saying.

Banerjee said that Singur was a symbol of the agitation against farmland acquisition.

"The Chief Minister will not have the last word. It is people of Singur who will have the last word," she added.

Reiterating that her party was not against industrialisation, she said it would not allow forcible acquisition of agricultural land in the name of setting up industries.

She added the movement against forcible acquisition of farmland would continue and could not be stopped with guns.

Turning to the police action at Nandigram, she said that CBI arrested 10 CPI-M activists and handed them over to the police.

“The Chief Minister could not shirk his responsibility for the 'genocide' in Nandigram. All those responsible for the Nandigram incident should get punishment,'' she demanded.

Alleging that the state government and the CPI-M were 'committing atrocities' on common people, she claimed many bodies could not be recovered at Nandigram, many children were missing and many bodies were not given a proper funeral.

“The people of Singur would light candles tomorrow in memory of those killed in police firing at Nandigram,” she said.
