The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) of Guru Shree Shanthi Vijai College was inaugurated for the current academic year on Tuesday on the college premises. The club, which is entering its sixth year, is aimed at spreading awareness on AIDS and empowering students to tackle the syndrome.

Shrinagesh, Deputy Director, Chennai Corporation Aids Prevention and Control Society, inaugurated the club.

In his address, Shrinagesh said there are many steps in place in tackle AIDS, adding that it was the attitude of people towards these patients that was deplorable.

“Drugs that control the spreading of AIDS are available, these drugs help keep a patient alive for about 25 years. What is of importance is that we must sympathise with these patients,” he said

Shrinagesh cited examples of people diagnosed with HIV positive and said that they were leading a very active and meaningful life.

K Jayashree, faculty coordinator, RRC, said that guest lectures and a variety of intra-college competitions were held last year to raise awareness on tackling AIDS.

“Guest lectures on AIDS awareness and blood safety were held in 2011. Dr Lakshmi Bai, Project Director, Tamil Nadu Aids Initiative, and other doctors gave lectures for the benefit of the students,” she added

The RRC club on its part has planned a range of activities for the year 2012-13, including life development programme for boys and girls and a visit to an AIDS orphanage on the eve of World Aids Day in December.

In addition, brief interactive sessions on harmful effects of drug abuse, awareness on tuberculosis will also be held. Short films on AIDS will also be screened for the benefit of the students.
