THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The capital district of the state is the capital of the divorce cases too, according to the data provided by the state government.The district had 6,000 divorce cases in 2011 in the two family courts at Thiruvananthapuram and Nedumangad.The 18 family courts of the state had a total of 38,231 cases filed last year, according to the reply given by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to a question by Mullakkara Ratnakaran in the State Assembly the other day.The majority of the cases are from Hindu and Christian families and those from Muslim community approach the court for maintenance.“Dowry is one of the reasons for divorce,” says Geena Kumari who deals mostly with family cases.Kannur came second in the list.The courts at Kannur and Thalassery together had 4,285 cases while Kollam came third with 4,243 cases in Kollam and Kottarakkara family courts.Thrissur may be the family court in the state with highest number of cases.It had 4,063 cases.Wayanad is at the bottom of the list as it had only 341 cases of divorce last year.
