Shiv Hazarika, a blind artist and writer from Sidhabari, Ahatguri in the Morigaon district, has captivated hearts and minds with his extraordinary journey. Hailing from the birthplace of Laxminath Bezbarua, Hazarika has been passionate about drama since childhood and continues to be a prominent figure in his community. Despite losing his sight, he defies the odds by creating stunning works of art and inspiring those around him with his resilience and dedication.
He also participated in the foreigner expulsion movement that took place in 1979 as the commander of the volunteer force of the Ahatguri Chhatra Sanstha. He suffered an injury to his right eye while marching to Morigaon to move a success. He was admitted to Guwahati Medical College but lost his sight due to some wrong treatment.
It is worth mentioning that Shiv Hazarika was deeply involved in drama, literature and culture, although he is not able to see with one of his eyes. In 1991, Shiv Hazarika directed a play called Shiv Shakti at the Durga Puja temple in Ahatguri and played a role also. During the play, a female character starts whipping Shiv Hazarika’s leg. He suffered an injury to his left eye and immediately bleeding started from his eyes. Even then, he continued to act in the play while wiping the blood. He was then admitted to the Nagaon Civil Hospital but lost his left eye. Shiv Hazarika completely lost both of his eyes.
While talking to Local18, Shiv Hazarika said that he would continue to do the play with his blind eyes. “I am not disappointed, I am doing drama, acting, and literature, and I will continue to do it with this blind eye for the rest of my life,” he said.
He has acted in 99 plays including model as well as theatrical plays since his childhood. He was an active member of the Ahatguri Branch Sahitya Sabha for 12 years and served as the President of the Branch. He was awarded the Centennial Organiser Award of the Assam Sahitya Sabha for his performances in theatre in various parts of Assam.
