Why this Kolaveri di seems to have earned the appreciation of two million people and got the entire nation talking about it. In fact, a few have also created a page for this most-wanted number, which seems to have been recreated in different versions. The latest version which seems to have caught the attention of fans is the one by Step Step Mani, who has used dance and mime to make the song more literal. Step Step Mani has become quite popular on YouTube where he has featured a video of his mime-style interpretative form of dance for Why this Kolaveri di. Step Step Mani's original name is Venkatesh Haritharan. A graduate from the University of Madras, he is a full-time professional theatre artiste. Consumed by his love for theatre, all that matters to Venkatesh is whether his audience is entertained. “Step Step Mani was my character's name in the play, Enna Da Rascala, by Stray Factory. Since that character is quite popular, we decided to do this video with that name.”His interpretation of Why this Kolaveri di has added to its popularity. In fact, they didn’t wait for an auspicious day to unveil this song, he says and adds, “The very moment, Sharad Pawar was slapped, this version of Kolaveri was launched. Actually, our version has no connection with the slap. It was just a coincidence and happened to be a hilarious moment for us.” And once it was launched, the video went viral. Little did he realise how popular it would become. By the second day after it was launched, this unique version of Kolaveri received 18,000 likes! However, he offers an update, “The count has now risen to 25,000.”“The idea is to interpret a lot of songs in the coming years. Since the song was already a hit, we felt it was the best platform to launch it.”The lyrics of the song are brought vividly to life and given meaning with a series of creative and expressive interpretative dance moves. For instance, his movement for Kolaveri di and the saxophone bit that he plays, definitely reminds one of the Mr Bean series. For him, miming isn’t new. Thanks to having played the character of Step Step Mani often, Venkatesh took only a night to practise his moves for this Kolaveri version. “It wasn’t difficult as we thought. Since the lyrics were in English, it was direct and we just took an evening to practise. The next morning, we shot the video without any copying or editing.” Having said that, Venkatesh and his friends have also planned to introduce more of dance interpretation videos to Chennaiites. “We are working on different ideas after this video became viral. In fact, we wanted to incorporate dance fights between two songs and something more hilarious than this version.”Now, for those who have not watched this video, if you have a couple of minutes to spare, check out his video titled Why this Kolaveri Di — Step Step Mani version on Youtube.
