KOCHI: Removal of sun control films from the vehicle windows is proving to be a costly exercise for Kochiites. But Kochi Police would do well to follow the example set by the Bangalore police in helping the citizens, rather than harassing them, in implementing the Supreme Court order. When several car accessory shops were charging Rs 500 to Rs 700 to remove the films, the Bangalore police conducted the camps in different places where the tinted screens were removed at a minimal cost. The camps were very successful and Bangalore police claim to have removed the films from about 50 percent of vehicles in the city. The camps are being conducted in different phases. By the end of the camps, 85 per cent of vehicles would be free of tinted films in Bangalore city.In Kochi, the police have not started enforcing the law to give the people ample time to remove the films. “The drive conducted in Bangalore was a good one. Even though we have not taken any step, we are giving enough time for the public to remove the films, so that later we can strictly enforce the rule,” Ernakulam Range IG K Padmakumar said. The Motor Vehicles Department also said that even it has not started booking the defaulters.“At present we are giving the warning. The strict implementation of the rule will take place only after a few weeks,” official in the Motor Vehicles Department said.
