Thiruvananthapuram: The festival season and heavy rainfall have added to the garbage mess that the capital is already in. Trash dumps, sodden with rainwater and providing a feast to vermin, have sprung up all over the city posing a major threat to health. The problem is particularly acute in the Chalai market area and Fort, with Corporation yet to begin garbage collection in earnest. The traders of the Chalai market had already lodged complaints with the Corporation regarding the pathetic situation. The situation on the TRIDA plot at Attakulangara, adjacent to Chalai, has to be seen to be believed.
On Monday, City Express had reported about the plight of this approximately six-acre-plot originally meant to house a shopping complex but now transformed into an enormous trash dump. On Thursday also, more wastes were dumped here by the Corporation and private parties, despite vehement objection of the local residents. According to them, tonnes of wastes were deposited on the land during the past two days alone.
In this neighbourhood, even the drains are choked with garbage and used plastic bottles. Inside Fort, the Corporation had cleared many of the small dumps over the past one month. But they have reappeared despite the civic authority posting warnings against the illegal dumping of garbage.
