KOCHI: There’s been a boom in the accessory culture everywhere, and of course trendy jewellery leads the pack. Women all over can never get enough of fancy ornaments, and each day one sees the market coming up with one innovative item after another.While gold and silver have their own pride of place, the bijou that is gaining popularity all over are eco-friendly ornaments. Many clearly prefer them to metal jewellery, as they are natural and aesthetically created. There’s a great variety coming in, with artists and designers getting more and more innovative. Visit select stores or exhibitions, and what one sees are innovative  natural ornament pieces made out of bamboo, stones, coconut shells, mesh, clay, redseeds, paper, crochet and feathers.Such kind of jewellery seems to be the choice of customers who like to experiment with their adornments and want their stuff to stand out. “Chic ornaments made of clay, wood and stone have a classy look and they go extremely well with cotton kurtis and Mutka silk saris,” says Divya Lenoy, who makes coconut shell pendants, along with wool, thread and jute ornaments.Tomy M J, the salesman of Goodwill Collections, Convent Junction says, “Wearing mix-and-match ornaments is the latest trend. We have a wide collection of clay and wooden ornaments. Such ornaments are especially suitable for the present climate, and there is wide demand for them in our shop, especially from the college students.”Nirupama Mathew, a literature student says, “I find wooden, clay and bamboo ornaments aesthetically more appealing and unique than gold and silver. Moreover these ornaments are pollution free, and are therefore definitely good for the body. Besides since these items are not produced on a large scale,buying them proves helpful to the respective artisans.”Their other feature is that these earthy ornaments are worn by women of all ages.Roselin Varghese, who makes clay jewellery adorned with mural paintings from her home in Tripunithura says, “Such accessories often have the tag line of being ‘statement ornaments’. Forty plus women often approach me for mural neck pieces and matching earrings made of clay that goes perfectly well with Kerala sari with printed mural borders.”Earthy ornaments are trendy among men too. Cyril John, a theatre student residing in the city says, “I have a collection of clay andwooden pendants which I wear along with my kurtis. There is an artistic element in such ornaments which indirectly creates an impression about us.”Eco-friendly ornaments are available in almost all fancy stores. They are also often seen exhibited at the arts and crafts expos, conducted regularly in the city.
