UN Council will regret its curbs: Iran
Ahmadinejad says those who voted for the UN nuclear resolution against the country would soon regret it.

Tehran: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that those who voted for the UN nuclear resolution against the country would soon regret it, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"'This resolution will not harm Iran and those who backed it will soon regret their superficial act," Ahmadinejad said. "Iranians are neither worried nor uncomfortable with the resolution... we will celebrate our atomic achievements in February," he said.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to impose sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment programme which, according to the US, is aimed at building nuclear weapons.

There is now a ban on the supply of specified materials and technology that could contribute to Iran's nuclear and missile programmes. It also freezes assets of key companies and individuals named on a UN list. And If Iran refuses to comply, the Council could adopt further non-military sanctions.

The unanimous vote came after months of back-and-forth negotiations between the Western powers, China and Russia.

Ahmadinejad rejected the UN sanctions resolution as 'a piece of torn paper', which would not scare him into stopping nuclear work. "It is a piece of torn paper, by which they aim to scare Iranians. It is in the Westerners' interests to live with a nuclear Iran," Ahmadinejad said.

Beginning Sunday, Iran is scheduled to start installing 3,000 centrifuges at its Natanz uranium enrichment plant, as an immediate reaction to the UN Security Council resolution, Tehran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said.

"We will start our installation activities at the Natanz facility from Sunday," he told the Kayhan newspaper. "It is our immediate answer to the resolution and we will go ahead with full speed."

Iran has condemned the resolution as an illegal measure outside the Council's jurisdiction. Larijani insisted sanctions would not deter Iran.
