THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ever wanted to visit the UN General Assembly? Come to the Little Flower Parish Hall, Vellayambalam, at 10 am on Friday. Christ Nagar International School, Kowdiar, is organising a ‘Model UN General Assembly’ - replicating the original- by involving students from various city schools. ‘’The 66th UN General Assembly-2012, will be closely replicated in the Model UN General Assembly. The five permanent member nations and ten non-permanent member nations, represented by the selected and groomed student speakers, will be debating on ‘The role of mediation in the settlement of disputes,’ said school principal Fr Josey Kollammallil. 193 nations participated in the recently- concluded UN General Assembly, in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US president Barack Obama were distinguished speakers. The voting procedure after the General Debate will also be featured in the Model UN General Assembly, he said. Shashi Tharoor MP, a former Under Secretary - General for Communication and Public Information at the UN, will be the chief guest at the inaugural function. The preparations for the Assembly started much early, with the speakers of the member nations being selected through an elocution contest, a statement from the school said. The best were selected for the final round, in which Dharini Suresh, Niranjana and Ambika from St Thomas Schools bagged the first three positions. The selected students went through a rigorous grooming process under the guidance of former Ambassador T P Srinivasan, a diplomat who has also held the illustrious post of Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Vienna.
