New Delhi: A soldier was wounded after guerillas from the Kurdistan Workers Party or PPK opened fire on a military control point at the Turkish-Iraq border.
The attack came even as the Turkish government was planning a major military incursion into Iraq to crush Kurdish rebels who use northern Iraq as a base to attack Turkish targets.
Tensions between Turkey and the US have also escalated. The US fears a Turkish incursion into Iraq could destabilise the region.
Relations between the two have worsened since a US resolution accused Turkey of genocide during World War I.
Ankara recalled its ambassador from the United States after the US vote. The US relies heavily on Turkish bases to supply its war effort in Iraq.
Rebels from PKK — who are fighting for an independent homeland in southeastern Turkey — had said on Friday that they are moving back into Turkey from northern Iraq.
The rebels had also warned in a statement that they would target Turkey's ruling AK Party and the main opposition CHP.
The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
