THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has flayed the UDF Government for its flawed police policy which had resulted in a spurt in crimes in different parts of the state. In a statement, he said that instead of  suppressing goons and thieves, the police were adopting a policy of encouraging them.  While the police use unnecessary force to  suppress people’s agitations, it was adopting an indifferent approach towards acts of law-breakers, he said. Many instances of lawlessness had been evident in the recent past. Three goons were killed in gang wars in the state capital recently and a gunman of a Congress MP had beaten a fellow bus traveller to death after branding him a pickpocket. In the Valakom teacher attack case, the police were trying to save the conspirators. Though a CBI probe had been announced in the Valakom case, no follow-up action had been taken, he said.At Vithura, a dalit youth was brutally beaten up in police lock up following which he committed suicide soon after his release. A youth undergoing a sentence in the Mavelikkara sub-jail was brutally tortured and eventually died in the Medical College hospital. An old mother died broken-hearted at Kasargod after her son was abducted by mafia gangs who demanded ransom amount for his release. Incidents of  daylight robberies and burglaries are becoming common. The latest in the series is a death of a youth following a Taliban-model attack on him at Mukkom in Kozhikode.Activists of the IUML and NDF were unleashing violence in many parts of Kasargod  district and the Kuttiadi-Nadapuram belt in Kozhikode district. The last-minute decision to disband the judicial commission which was probing the Kasargod firing had emboldened the communal elements. On a whole, the UDF Government’s policy of submitting to vested interests and resorting to unjustifiable transfers of police officials for clinging on to power, had led to anarchy in the law and order front. If this trend continued, it will have disastrous consequences, Achuthanandan warned. Unless an impartial policy policy is implemented, goons and communal forces cannot be checked effectively, he said.
