Parents of the three victims of the bus burning case of February 2000 hailed the death sentence given to the accused.

New Delhi: Parents of the three victims of the bus burning case of February 2000 hailed the verdict after a court in Salem sentenced three AIADMK men to death on Friday. "Though late, it is the correct judgement," the parents said.

"God has given good justice. At one time we were apprehensive whether the trial would proceed or not," they told PTI soon after Additional Sessions Judge D Krishnaraja delivered the sentence.

The court on Thursday had found the three - Neduthezhian , Madhu and Muniappan - and 25 other party workers guilty of burning a bus carrying Tamil Nadu Agricultural University students in 2000.

The AIADMK workers were protesting the conviction of their leader Jayalalithaa in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case.

The Additional District Sessions Judge D Krishna Raj said that the three death sentence awardees are required to pay a fine of Rs 59,000 each for various offences including attempt to murder, the 25 others are required to pay a fine of Rs 13,000 each for offences including attempt to murder.

Kokilavani, Hemalatha and Gayathri, students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, were burnt alive when the mob set fire their college bus at Illakkiampatti in Dharmapuri.

Kokilavani's father N P Veerasamy, on whose plea the Madras High Court transferred the case from Krishnagiri to Salem and ordered fresh trial, said they (the relatives of the victims) were pained at the progress of the case before he approached the high court.

Court sources said this was the first death penalty awarded in the district after 1970 when four persons were sentenced to death in a case relating to the murder of four persons.
