VISAKHAPATNAM: Thousands of people displaced by 1,046 MW coal-based power plant of Hinduja National Power Corporation Limited (HNPCL) along with Pendurthi MLA, Panchakarla Ramesh Babu staged a massive protest at Palavalasa village of Pedagantyada mandal here on Monday demanding stalling of works by HNPCL demanding resolution of their demands.Following reports that the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation’s (GVMC) is gearing up to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to HNPCL, locals of 32 affected villages today launched a massive protest at the land acquired by the government for the plant and raised slogans demanding stalling of the works. The agitators had formed a forum few days back to relaunch the protest against HNPCL.HNPCL is going ahead with the construction without fulfilling the demands of employment to the people displaced by the plant and relocation of villages to be affected by pollution caused by plant to safer zones among others, said agitators. Fisherfolk and farmers said the project would have an adverse impact on their livelihood and face health problems due to massive pollution caused by the plant. GVMC will issue NOC to Hinduja without fulfilling their demands, they said. However, the agitators vowed that they would not allow the construction activity until their demands are met. RDO Satyanarayana assured the agitators that he would take steps to be hold a meeting between the district administration and people displaced by the plant within fifteen days to discuss various issues.It may be recalled that during the visit of a committee headed by Mayor P Janardhana Rao to visit the affected villages by the plant recently, Mayor, some corporators and Pendurthy MLA, P Rameshbabu were gheraoed by locals demanding cancellation of NOC.
