Two sisters refused to marry their grooms when they demanded dowry. Villagers made sure the men were fined.
Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh): In a rare incident, two girls refused to marry after the grooms' family demanded dowry, prompting locals to make the men pay up a Rs-15,000 compensation.
Sisters Mohsina and Momina of Jainpur village in the district refused to marry brothers Usman and Gulfam after the latter's father allegedly demanded two cars in dowry last night just before the 'Nikaah', witnesses said.
The situation turned tense after the locals allegedly held the grooms and refused to let them go.
A panchayat, which was convened to settle the dispute, ordered the grooms' family to pay the compensation, they said.
The marriage party returned to their village of Somta after paying the fine.
