From Mysuru Palace, Lalbagh Botanical Garden to Jog Falls, there are numerous tourist attractions in Karnataka. People often visit this state for their greenery and exotic locations. The latest addition to the list of popular places to visit in Karnataka is Chelavara Falls in Kodagu district. It is a serene waterfall created by a tributary of river Kaveri with a 150 ft drop over a rock, which is said to resemble the shape of a tortoise. During the rainy season, the Chelavara waterfall witnesses a high footfall of tourists. To reach the falls, one needs to trek a few kilometres, which gives the tourists the experience of a short adventure. It is also known as Horseshoe Fall because the waterfall is shaped like a horse’s toe.
The area around the falls is surrounded by dense forest, green valleys and beautiful flowers. This place is considered one of the best locations for photoshoots. This waterfall is a little less crowded compared to other falls in Coorg, due to its remote location and a little steep terrain to see the falls. The people who have visited these falls said that a ten-minute walk on a muddy or slippery pathway is a bit challenging.
Chelavara Falls is located in Cheyyandane village, off Talakaveri-Virajpete road. These waterfalls can be visited at any time of the day. The water is about 100 metres deep with an unpredictable rock profile at the bottom, making Chelavara Falls unsafe for bathing and swimming. It is 260 kilometres from Bengaluru and 37 kilometres from Madikeri. Kannur International Airport is 80 kilometres away. Public transport is available to Virajpet town. From Virajpet jeeps or taxis can be hired to reach Chelavara Falls.
As per Karnataka Tourism, there are multiple homestays available within a few kilometres of the falls. Club Mahindra Virajpet and The Tamara Coorg are two luxury resorts 12 km from the falls.
