Siliguri: A wild elephant went on the rampage in West Bengal's Siliguri town on Wednesday damaging buildings and cars even as residents watched helplessly.
The huge male elephant, which had strayed from the nearby Baikunthapur forest, was first spotted at Dabgram, Fulbari
areas of the town.

Panic-stricken people ran for cover with policemen trying to calm them.
Forest personnel rushed to the spot and fired tranquiliser shots at the jumbo, but for a long time the elephant was still not under control.
Meanwhile, it went beserk and turned its wrath on the houses damaging walls and pillars.Baikunthapur Forest Ranger Sanjoy Dutta said at least five to six buildings were damaged by the elephant.
It then moved on to Ashigarh, another densely populated area of the town.
Police had a tough time trying to control the crowd and traffic while forest officials followed the elephant waiting for the tranquiliser to take effect.
Finally the elephant was tranquilised after seven hours, loaded on to a truck using two cranes before being taken away.

Forest officias said it will be examined by vets before being released in the Sukhna forest
