THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The sub-centre of the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) at Thiruvananthapuram is organising a workshop on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at Sasthra Bhavan Auditorium, Pattom, here on Thursday.The workshop will be inaugurated by Water Resources Minister P J Joseph at a function to be presided over by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) executive vice president C T S Nair. As many as 100 delegates from various government departments and agencies such as Irrigation, Agriculture, Groundwater, Water Supply, Rural Development, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Health are expected to participate in the workshop. The workshop is being organised in the context of growing understanding that the present sectoral organisation of water management institution belies the multifunctional nature of water, and that the adaptation of integrated management concept and methods is an urgent need. The organisers say that IWRM is a process which promotes the coordinated management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystem. Therefore, in order to proceed in line with IWRM principles and methods, capacity development is inevitable at all levels of officials. CWRDM executive director K V Jayakumar, Kerala Water Authority managing director Asok Kumar Singh, Irrigation chief engineer P Lathika, KSCSTE member secretary K K Ramachandran and CWRDM scientist George Chackacherry will speak. Papers on various aspects of IWRM will be presented by K V Jayakumar, George Chackacherry and V P Dinesan.
