Food delivery app Zomato’s top executives attended a Zoom call that went on for over 20 hours to find a way out of the massive row over its announcement of a ‘pure veg’ fleet, CEO Deepinder Goyal said, reported NDTV. Zomato’s recent announcement of a ‘pure veg’ food delivery fleet with green uniforms met with backlash on social media.
Row Over Zomato’s ‘Pure Veg’ Food Delivery Fleet
Under the ‘pure veg’ fleet initiative by Zomato, the food delivery app will collaborate with restaurants serving only vegetarian food and delivery partners in this service won’t handle non-vegetarian food packets. Zomato further introduced a green uniform for delivery partners of the ‘pure veg’ fleet.
However, a massive row erupted on social media over the move with people pointing out different problems with it. While some equated it to a form of “modern-day casteism”, others cautioned that a different uniform for vegetarian food orders might create trouble for those ordering non-vegetarian dishes in many ways.
The delivery partners in red uniforms could be altogether barred in societies and residential complexes dominated by vegetarians, or it could also lead to tensions between vegetarian landlords and non-vegetarian tenants.
CEO Deepinder Goyal, while speaking at the NDTV Indian Of The Year awards on Saturday, said he and his team responded swiftly and discarded the separate uniform plan.
He further said Zomato will go ahead with the ‘pure veg’ fleet but the option will show only on the app. People can choose to avail the service in the app but all delivery partners will continue wearing the red uniform.
What Made Zomato CEO Come Up With ‘Pure Veg’ Fleet?
“We did a large survey saying ‘what will make you order from Zomato more’. And this came up,” Deepinder Goyal said while speaking to NDTV.
In his social media posts earlier, the Zomato CEO had stressed that the ‘pure veg’ service strictly serves a dietary preference, irrespective of a person’s religion or caste.
“Please note that this Pure Veg Mode or the Pure Veg Fleet doesn’t serve or alienate any religious, or political preference,” he had said.
