An Indian restaurant in North Carolina named Chai Pani was recently voted as the best restaurant in US.
The popular restaurant is known for its affordable eating options. Known for its Indian street food, was named America’s most Outstanding Restaurant at the James Beard Foundation Awards in Chicago on Monday, topping nominees such as the iconic Brennan’s in New Orleans.
This year, the honour was bestowed for two years after the event was called off last two times due to Covid. Like in other countries, many restaurants were forced to shut shop during these trying times.
This award comes at a time when more and more Americans are preferring Indian food over others. Recently, actor Johnny Depp spent around 45 Lakhs at an Indian restaurant after winning the defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Herd.
The organisers announced that this time around, the award recipients and the nominee slate were more diverse than it ever has been in the US. Moreover, there was also more geographic variety, rather than years past when many winners came out of New York or Chicago.
The menu at Chai Pani, features Indian snacks like chaat. Among other winners were the Native American restaurant Owamni in Minneapolis, where the staff is 75% indigenous, as Best New Restaurant.
Dawn Padmore, vice president of awards, said the foundation did a “deep dive” on itself during its hiatus.
“Looking at the audience and seeing so many different people, it feels different,” she said. “It’s about reflecting the true diversity of the industry.”
