Diabetes is a dangerous health condition in which a person’s blood sugar levels become uncontrolled and might cause organ damage. While the condition cannot be eliminated, it is manageable with the help of medicines and insulin. Often, many viral and bacterial infections, including HIV, can spread from one person to another through blood, but can this happen in the case of diabetes as well? Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, shared in an exclusive interview with News18 that diabetes cannot be spread through blood.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is caused by a decrease in insulin production or the inability to use insulin in the body. The disease does not spread through viruses or bacteria but is mostly caused by genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors.
One might also wonder if diabetes patients can donate blood. Dr Sonia Rawat says that diabetic patients can donate blood after following certain steps.
Diabetes patients whose blood sugar is under control and who do not have any other disease can donate blood. If a patient’s diabetes is uncontrolled or they have any other disease, blood donation is not advised. All diabetes patients should consult a doctor and get themselves examined before donating blood.
As per health experts, the sugar level of a diabetic patient should be within the normal range at the time of blood donation. Diabetic patients with high or low blood sugar levels are advised not to donate blood. If the blood donor is taking diabetes medicines, it should be ensured that the medicines do not have any side effects on blood donation.
