Museum MACAN -- Indonesia's first major museum for modern and contemporary art -- has announced that it will open to the public in November with an inaugural exhibition featuring works by Robert Rauschenberg, Yayoi Kusama and Jean-Michel Basquiat alongside a number of Indonesian artists.
Museum MACAN will be housed in a 4,000-square-meter (43,000 sq. ft.) space, including 2,000 square meters (21,528 sq. ft) of gallery space, a 500-square-meter (5,382 sq. ft.) indoor sculpture garden and public areas. MACAN aims to exhibit a large and growing collection of modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and from around the world, as well as to commission new works that broaden perspectives on contemporary art.
Opening November 7, "Art Turns. World Turns. Exploring the Collection of Museum MACAN" will include 90 artworks selected from more than 800 owned by the museum's founder, Haryanto Adikoesoemo. The show will mark the first public viewing of the museum's collection, revealed as it opens its new building in West Jakarta.
Raden Saleh, S. Sudjojono, FX Harsono and Arahmaini are among the Indonesian artists to be displayed in the exhibition, which intends to offer "a reading of Indonesian art history in dialogue with world art history."
Many of the Indonesian works have not been exhibited publicly in decades or at all, including works by Sudjana Kerton, Trubus Soedarsono, and Nashar. Several of the international works will also be shown in the country for the first time, including works by Robert Rauschenberg, Park Seo-Bo, Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst and Yukinori Yanagi.
The show will be divided into four sections highlighting two centuries of art and covering such periods as the Dutch colonial occupation in Indonesia and the country's fight for independence. A third section covering the period of "superpower competition between the Soviet Union and the United States" will include Robert Rauschenberg's "Rush 20 (Cloister)" and Gerhard Richter's "Abstraktes Bild," while the fourth section, titled "The Global Soup," will include Yayoi Kusama's "Infinity Mirrored Room - Brilliance of the Souls" and Jeff Koons' "The Xenophobic Movie Director or Our Foreign Policy."
The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (MACAN) is among the most highly anticipated new cultural institutions of 2017. Its November opening will coincide with the Jakarta Biennale and the Biennale Jogja, both of which are expected to attract the international art world to Indonesia.
