Shah Rukh Khan is back on screen in what looks like a no-nonsense cinema, after a long time. After 2007, with 'Om Shanti Om', Shah Rukh turned into this multi-millionaire producer whose only aim was to entertain his audience. 'Ra. One', 'Chennai Express', 'Happy New Year' and 'Dilwale', are the films which deeply affected my conscious and questioned my 'fandom' for Bollywood's Baadshaah.
His latest film 'Fan' directed by 'Band Bajaa Baarat' director Maneesh Sharma, looks like a revival of our beloved Shah Rukh Khan who was known for his character rather than a money maker at box office. 'King Khan' who started his journey in Bollywood with grey characters is back to his roots with Gaurav. Well, as the fan girl inside me dances with excitement to have her favourite star back (almost), I list out the films that made me a Shah Rukh Khan fan for his attitude, acting and irreplaceable charm.
1) Sunil from 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa'
I personally consider Sunil to be one of the finest characters portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan till date. The innocence on his face, happy-go lucky attitude, portrayal of real human emotions and his unconditional love for Ana. The connect between Sunil and the audience was real. I laughed at his goofy, careless attitude and felt heartbroken when Anna rejected her love. Sunil was real, a guy next door with big heart; a careless son and an ardent lover.
2) Rahul from 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'
'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' was my first film in a theatre. At the age of 4, I never really got what the film was all about but one man got all my attention. Rahul was the popular college kid with an attitude to die for. In early 2000's Rahul was the trendsetter with his 'cool' chain and flower-print shirts. However, Rahul Malhotra for me was much more than a guy with swag. He impressed me with the way his eyes expressed everything before words came out. He defined 'love' for most of the 90's and 00's kids. Tacky or not, Rahul was the best friend we all wanted to fall in love with!
3) Aman from 'Kal Ho Na Ho'
Shah Rukh Khan won accolades for his performance as Aman Mathur in 2004 super hit 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. A love story inspired from 'Anand', I could never imagine anyone else in those white net shirts singing to me ,my life's motto! Intensity with which Aman taught us about life, love and sacrifice through Naina and Rohit was haunting. Aman was a part of my upbringing and gave me a film I resort to whenever life turns blue for me. He is and always will be my favourite guide.
4) Amar from 'Dil Se'
Another gem from Shah Rukh Khan's career, 'Dil Se' dealt with an untouchable topic of insurgency and internal terrorism in North East India. Amar Kant Verma for me was any regular guy who fell in love with a terrorist and made sure his love won in the end. Being from a military background, pursuing a career in media, Amar connected to me on many parts. The sense of infused patriotism fighting with his love for Moina, the way his duty as a citizen never took a backseat, Amar was a man of worth.
5) Mohan from 'Swades'
Shah Rukh Khan was always the face of Bollywood in the era of globalisation and post-globalisation, however his portrayal of an NRI in Ashutosh Gowariker's masterpiece was different. A film that aimed at sky while remaining rooted to the ground had SRK play an astronaut searching for his real identity. For a generation, who's only aim is to go abroad and live there forever, 'Swades' was a reality check which told them what home really is. Mohan was sincere, confused, intelligent and lost at the same time. He appealed to me with his sincerity and his dilemma made me feel for him.
6) Kabir from 'Chak De India'
A strict coach, a national player who lost all his glory, a defamed sportsman who gave it all to prove himself, Kabir Khan was an inspiration for me. Inspired from a true event, 'Chak De! India' was a sports film all about patriotism and underdogs winning. It highlighted the state of women's hockey and how right direction, motivation and hardwork pays off. However, for me the film was all about Kabir Khan. His struggle to unite a divided team, deal with politics, pay price for a missed goal, and give everything in him to win back his glory. 'Chak De! India' reminds me of the brilliance SRK has as an actor.
7) Ajay from 'Baazigar'
Never has a grey character in Bollywood appealed to me more than Ajay Sharma. The mastermind criminal whose only goal was to avenge his father's death and mother's illness. A loving son, caring lover and a ruthless murderer, scheming psychopath at the same time. 'Baazigar' had SRK delivering one of his best performances. Although, Ajay never had me feel for him emotionally but there was a sense of pity that I feel whenever I watch the film. Ajay in 'Baazigar' shows the streak of versatility 'Baadshah' has and nobody can take it away from him.
With the release of 'Fan' I expect to add another gem to my list. The fan in me is dying to watch Gaurav on screen and bring back the charm of Shah Rukh Khan. Let's see how this 'Jabra' fan of SRK connects with this childhood fan here. *Fingers crossed*
