Shraddha Kapoor started her film career with Teen Patti but it was Mohit Suri’s Aashiqui 2 that catapulted her to fame. She then went on to give some five back to back hits, including Ek Villian, Baaghi and ABCD 2. However, her last two outings Ok Jaanu and Haseena Parker failed to impress audiences. But the actress says it’s a part and parcel of life and one can’t really do much about it. Shraddha, who was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Bioscope Village at the ongoing 48th International Film Festival of India in Goa, also opened up about her struggles before Aashiqui 2, her love for singing and her upcoming collaboration with Baahubali star Prabhas.
Acting Bug
I wanted to work in films since I was young. I was curious about this profession because of my father and I used to observe him. He would often change his look for his roles and it fascinated me a lot. So I wanted to become an actress and I think today I’m just living my dream every day. Every single day is a blessing.
Dropped out of a film when she was 15
I would have loved to do that film. I was 15 years old at the time but I would not look correct for that particular role because I was too young for that character. So that was the reason I chose to opt out of the project. I did my schooling from an ICSE school and then went to an international school. I also went to America for a year to study and then I dropped out. But I don’t encourage anyone to drop out. Please don’t do that. I was very impatient to get into films.
Singing love
It all started in a bathroom. Thankfully, my director pushed me and people liked it. I really enjoy singing and I hope people also like listening to me.
Eureka Moment
It was a very loud voice deep down from my heart that said I wanted to start acting and when I came back to Mumbai for my break, I started getting audition offers. Actually a lot of people think that if you’re a son or a daughter of an established actor, you don’t have to audition or go through struggles which is not true. I can’t even count how many auditions I have given or how many movies I was confirmed for and then replaced, but it happens.
Struggles
Before Aashiqui 2 there was a really tough phase of giving many auditions and trying to get a film for myself. I didn’t even read the whole script of Aashiqui. Mohit just narrated the entire story to me in two minutes and I felt that if I wouldn’t do this film, it’ll be a huge loss for me. So, I didn’t even hear the script. And I told him that I wanted to be Aarohi Keshav Sindhe.
On Saaho
I’m going to do my first mutilingual film Saaho. So, I’m going to speak in Telugu as well as in Hindi in the movie. I’m very excited and I have to say it’s challenging when you don’t speak a language. But I’m having a so much fun speaking in Telugu. I think the reason I could pick it up a little bit is because I speak Marathi. I’m not learning the language but mainly I understand my dialogues.
Favourite character
I don’t think you can ever remake that film. But my all time favourite film is Pyasa and Waheeda Rehman’s role in the film was just amazing. I don’t think anybody should remake it.
On setbacks
I also think that my initial films did very well so anything that didn’t match up to that then it would be viewed as falling short but I’d have to say the kind of love that I still receive from everybody despite my movies doing well or not well is priceless.
