Jamie Foxx Confirmed To Lead Spawn Reboot
Comic book movie Spawn, based on the Todd McFarlane series, has found its antihero: Jamie Foxx, star of Ray, Collateral and Law Abiding Citizen.

Canadian comic book author Todd McFarlane is to launch his feature-length directorial career with Spawn, with Jamie Foxx at last installed as the title character.

Foxx had been associated with the project since 2013, and That Hashtag Show earlier reported that he had been offered the part at the start of May. The Hollywood Reporter now confirms that Foxx has joined the project in its current form. Blumhouse Productions, which specializes in making hits out of relatively low-budget horror pitches, is backing the project.

Its roster of recent hits include Get Out, Insidious, The Purge, Paranormal Activity, Split and Sinister.

Foxx is to play a CIA special operative, Al Simmons, who was betrayed by his team and then by the denizens of hell. He is offered the opportunity to come back to earth, reincarnated through demonic means, but on his return finds that his wife, believing him dead, has moved on and moved in with his best friend. Then he sets about fighting the evil forces that convinced him to take on such a devil's bargain in the first place.

Debuting in 1992 through Image Comics, Spawn has been previously adapted into a 1992 movie starring Michael Jai White and a three-season 1997 animated series with Keith David voicing the lead character.

Previously credited with directing and animating music videos by Korn, Pearl Jam and Disturbed, McFarlane also created Spider-Man offshoot Venom, a grotesque human-alien symbiote played by Tom Hardy in October 2018's movie of the same name.

McFarlane is also working on a BBC America TV series, Sam and Twitch, whose lead characters are police officers and, following a brief period of opposition to Spawn's ways and means, become allies within law enforcement.
