Prithviraj Sukumaran made his directorial debut with the superhit film Lucifer in 2019, with Mohanlal in the lead. Prithviraj himself played a supporting role. The crime action drama was a big hit and Lucifer collected more than Rs 128 crore on a Rs 30 crore budget. The movie was also remade in Telugu as Godfather with Chiranjeevi in the lead, but the remake failed to live up to the original and was unsuccessful at the box office. Now all eyes are veered towards the sequel to Lucifer titled L2: Empuraan. Prithviraj Sukumaran has returned as the director, while Mohanlal takes up the mantle of the protagonist again.
In a recent episode of Bigg Boss Malayalam, Mohanlal revealed the current status of the production for L2: Empuraan. According to Mohanlal, the film started its first schedule in Ladakh, after which shooting shifted to the US, UK and Chennai. He said that at present the movie was being shot at Thiruvananthapuram. He revealed that he will soon travel to Gujarat as well as Dubai to shoot some of his scenes. He also revealed that the film will either be released late this year or in January next year. Mohanlal revealed that the film is likely to release in December 2024 or January 2025.
Mohanlal said that the movie will delve deeper into the story of Khureshi-Ab’ram. The identity of Khureshi-Ab’ram had been kept secret for the entirety of Lucifer, with Mohanlal being revealed to be the one in a mid credits scene.
In October of last year, a first look poster for the film was unveiled which had Mohanlal’s back to the camera without revealing his look. Now, on the occasion of Mohanlal’s 64th birthday, Prithviraj released the second poster of L2: Empuraan. The poster has Mohanlal sporting an all black look, complete with black shades as he walks amongst a crowd of armed security personnel. The poster has certainly increased the anticipation for the movie.
