Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series Heeramandi was released on Netflix earlier this month. It soon became a talking point among audiences for its historical inaccuracies and casting choices. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his niece, Sharmin Segal, who essays the role of Alamzeb in the series, especially bore the brunt of heavy critique by the viewers. Among this, a clip of Sonakshi roasting Sharmin in Munawar Faruqui’s Netflix video has gone viral.
In a now-viral clip on Reddit, Sonakshi roasts Sharmin and says, “Sharmin ko har din set ka wrap jaldi karwana tha. Raat main jaldi so jaati thi, agle din school bhi toh jaana tha. Sharmin din bhar jitne Gen Z alfaaz ratt jaati hai, kaash kisi din set pe aane se pehle apne dialogues bhi yaad karke aati.”

Sharmin clapped back and said, “Sanjeeda Heeramandi main Waheeda bani hain, is baat pe ek sher arz karna chahti hoon. Waheeda ke naseeb main batua hai khaali, Fareedan (Sonakshi’s character) se kya dosti karogi voh khud hai jaali (fraud)? Choti behen hoke dushman ke saath haath mila liya. Yeh karke, apni khud ki aukaat gira di.”
While this roast was part of the series promotion, Sharmin Segal, who is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece, has been receiving a volley of criticism for her “expressionless” performance. A section of the internet even claims that “nepotism got her this role”. Recently, actor Shruti Sharma, who played Sharmin’s maid in Heeramandi, came out in her support.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shruti said, “I don’t know what audiences have liked or not liked about Sharmin, but I’ve seen her trying her best like everyone else on the sets. It doesn’t matter who’s being trolled, but trolling is a bad thing to do. Criticism is one thing; healthy criticism is always welcome, but trolling is unacceptable. It is a very negative way of approaching anyone. It is a kind of mental harassment. If it is happening, I am very concerned for her right now.”
Sharmin, the daughter of Bella Bhansali Segal and Deepak Segal, plays the role of Alamzeb in the show, which boasts an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Shekhar Suman, and Aditi Rao Hydari.
While Manisha, Sonakshi and Aditi have been getting much love and appreciation for their solid performances, Sharmin has been receiving a huge backlash for “holding the same expression” throughout the show. Following the constant negativity, Sharmin has turned off comments on her recent picture of her with Sanjay Leela Bhansali at the Los Angeles premiere of Heeramandi.
