Taylor Swift Curates Playlists For Each Stage Of Heartbreak Ahead Of Album Release
Taylor Swift is guiding Swifties through the five stages of heartbreak and grief explored in her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department.

Taylor Swift made Grammy history by winning her 13th award this year. During the special night, the singer sparked excitement among Swifties with the announcement of her next potential Grammy-winning album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD). Scheduled to release on April 19, Swift’s 11th album features a dramatic black and white cover. Amidst her ongoing Eras Tour, the singer-songwriter has turned professor, as she’s taking Swifties through the five stages of heartbreak explored in the album. Swift introduced five new playlists on Apple Music, each representing the stages of heartbreak, ‘denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.’ Accompanied by ‘A Message From Taylor’ voice memos, the playlists feature Swift’s songs carefully curated to reflect each emotion.

The Denial playlist, which Swift calls ‘I Love You, It’s Ruining My Life Songs,’ includes tracks like Lavender Haze, Style and Treacherous. Swift describes this selection of songs that capture the feeling of becoming so engrossed in something that it becomes difficult to recognize warning signs, leading to moments of denial and even delusion. Moving on to the Anger playlist, titled ‘You Don’t Get to Tell Me About Sad Songs,’ Swift has included songs like Vigilant S**t, Bad Blood and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Explaining her choice, Swift reveals that these songs were all born from anger. She shares that over the years, she has learned to control her anger with songwriting, which she finds to be a healthy process.

Bargaining, titled, ‘Am I Allowed to Cry?,’ Taylor Swift has included songs like Soon You’ll Get Better, Say Don’t Go and This Is Me Trying, among others. She said, “This playlist takes you through songs that I’ve written when I was in the bargaining stage, times when you try to make deals with yourself, or someone you care about. You’re trying to make things better, you’re oftentimes feeling really desperate, because oftentimes we have a gut intuition that tells us things are not going to go the way that we hope, which makes us more desperate, which makes us bargain more.”

In the Depression playlist, titled ‘Old Habits Die Screaming,’ Swift added tracks such as Champagne Problems, We Were Happy and Forever Winter. She explains that during lonely or hopeless times, she turns to songwriting as a way to manage her emotions. Despite the difficulty of experiencing such emotions, she finds comfort in listening to or writing songs that express loss and hopelessness.

The fifth and final stage of heartbreak is Acceptance and it is titled ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.’ The playlist features You’re On Your Own, Kid, Closure, Now That We Don’t Talk and Long Story Short. Taylor Swift explained, “Here we finally find acceptance and can start moving forward from loss or heartbreak. These songs represent making room for more good in your life, making that choice because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too.”

The Tortured Poets Department will feature a total of 16 tracks, including a bonus song titled The Manuscript on the standard edition. For the album, the singer is collaborating with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine. Surprisingly, Malone is leading the charge on Fortnite.
