After Dangal, Jolly LLB 2 and Naam Shabana, Vidya Balan starer Begum Jaan is the latest Bollywood film to have faced a ban in Pakistan. The film, which is based during the partition era, will not be releasing in Pakistan, confirmed Mahesh Bhatt - the film's producer.
Speaking to India Today, Bhatt said, "I was told by my distributor that Pakistan has a policy does not permit the import of films which deal with the issue of partition. On learning this I requested the key officer of the censor board of Pakistan to at least view the film and then take a decision. I was assured that they would look into the matter. Sadly, I have not heard from them after that."
Directed by Srijit Mukherji, Begum Jaan is a remake of Bengali film Rajkahini. The film talks about a brothel which falls on the border of India and Pakistan and how the the occupants are asked to leave in the wake of the partition.
"Later my distributor informed me that his office has been intimated that Begum Jaan should not be imported by him into Pakistan," added Bhatt.
The film features Vidya Balan, Gauahar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Ashish Vidyarthi, Rajit Kapur, Chunkey Pandey and others.
Just a few days back, Aamir Khan's Dangal did not get commercial release in Pakistan. The Pakistan Censor Board had reportedly asked the makers of the film to make two cuts, one where the national flag is visible and a scene where the Indian national anthem is being played. Producer Aamir Khan refused to make the cuts and decided not to release the film at all in the country.
Taapsee Pannu's film Naam Shabana did not get a release in Pakistan because it had 'terrorism-related scenes' while Akshay Kumar's Jolly LLB 2 did not get any release because it spoke about Kashmir issue in certain scenes.
