Every person who is fond of Indian films knows Rajesh Khanna. He was one of the most well-known actors in the film industry. His films used to run in theatres for weeks recording huge box office collections. There was one time when he himself went to a theatre to watch a film. As soon as the audience found out that the star was present at the theatres, they went crazy resulting in huge chaos. He was at the peak of his stardom when this incident happened. Kamal Haasan and Rajesh Khanna shared a very good bond. In an interview, Kamal Haasan said that he didn’t like to address the superstar as Kaka. He said, “I was willing to call him Bade Bhaiyya or Mr Khanna but not Kaka like others.” He mentioned that once they planned to visit a theatre to watch a film In Chennai. Everything was reportedly arranged by Kamal Haasan himself.
But while they were watching the film, Kamal realised that Rajesh Khanna hadn’t been to a public theatre for years and things could get out of hand if the audience found out that the superstar was present in the theatre. Kamal mentioned that Rajesh Khanna enjoyed the film very much and refused to leave until the end titles. “I was very much worried as Rajesh Khanna refused to leave the theatre early. I was thinking that if audiences got to know he was present, there would be a stampede. As soon as the lights were switched on, people recognised him and went wild. Massive chaos took place at the theatres and I had to be his bodyguard. I guarded him as he walked out of the theatre. In this process, his shirt was torn but he enjoyed the incident thoroughly.”
Though Khanna didn’t mind the widespread attention, his wife Dimple Kapadia was angry with Kamal Haasan. “She wanted to know what I was thinking when I took him to a public theatre. Anything could have happened that day,” Kamal Haasan recalled. He shared a close bond with Dimple, even after her marriage broke with Rajesh Khanna.
