Bollywood actress Padmini Kolhapure and Rishi Kapoor had worked together on many films. But their jodi will forever be known for Prem Rog. Released in 1982, the film featured Padmini and Rishi as star crossed lovers. The film features several memorable scenes, including a scene in which Padmini slaps Rishi. Turns out, the scene was not easy to shoot since director Raj Kapoor was not fully impressed with Padmini’s attempts at slapping Rishi. In an old interview, Padmini said she had to slap Rishi several times before Raj okay-ed the shot.
In an interview in 2021, Padmini told Times Now, “Slapping scene wow, I know. I had to slap Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) and of course what normally happens in an action na, and they synchronise the slap with the action. But Raj (Kapoor) uncle didn’t want that, he wanted me to slap him, and then he told ‘Nahi nahi tum thappad maro (no, you slap), I want that realistic kind of shot’. Then Chintu told me, ‘You go ahead and slap me’.”
She explained that she would start off with a swing but would slow down her hand close to Rishi’s cheek. “The first take, my hand would just start with that swing and slow down near that cheek. But then Raj uncle would say, ‘No, I don’t want such a soft slap.’ And that shot we had to take some 7-8 re-takes. Something kept going wrong, either it was a camera issue, light issue, technical issue and I had to slap him 7-8 times. Now coming to think of it, I don’t know what would’ve happened if I had to get so many slaps,” Padmini recalled.
Prem Rog dealt with a bold subject of a man falling in love with a widow, a topic that was a taboo in the 1980s. Besides Rishi and Padmini, the film also starred Shammi Kapoor, Nanda, Tanuja, Sushma Seth, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raza Murad, Om Prakash, and Bindu. Prem Rog went on to win four Filmfare Awards including Best Director, which was presented to Raj Kapoor. Padmini also won the Best Actor (Female).
