Taking a break from the melodramatic romantic saga and action packed sequences; Rajesh Pillai’s ‘Traffic’ conveys the message that all is not bad in this world. Based on the theme of humanity and depicting a real life incident, the movie is a good watch and brings a smile at the end. The nearly two-hour journey of a heart from Mumbai to Pune keeps one hooked to the seat till it reaches its recipient. Heart beat increases with the speed of the car and eyes looking for it at every turn, it makes difficult to skip a scene.
Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Jimmy Sheirgill, Divya Dutta, ‘Traffic’ is a thriller drama but missing a sense of urgency, may be because we all knew the end. As the movie is based on a real-life incident, it has an instant connect and leaves an impact.
Acting Prowess
Manoj Bajpayee, plays the role of a traffic constable Godbole, who takes on the Herculean task of transporting heart from Mumbai to Pune (160 kms) in two and half hours to save life of a 12-year-old girl. Corruption tainted constable makes the most of the chance to clear off his name and create history. Even with less dialogues, Bajpayee engages the audience with his expressions and quick decisions to complete the project successfully.
On the other side is helpless mother Divya Dutta who is seeing her daughter dying every second. Apart from pleading for help in whatever way possible, she stands like a rock besides her daughter. The way she appeals for help from Rehan Ali's parents and then from Parambrata Chatterjee is moving. The pain and fear of losing child is captivating.
Even other actors Parambrata Chatterjee, Amol Parashar justify their roles.
Emotional Turbulence Handled Convincingly
The movie begins with an accident of a young journalist Rehan Ali (Vishal Singh) and with no chances of his survival. Death of a young life is bound to break hearts and it is the most difficult decision to switch off the ventilator through which your child is surviving. The emotional turbulence and saying goodbye to your loved one was aptly portrayed by Kitu Gidwani and Sachin Khedekar.
Strong Script
The movie revolves around Bajpayee, the man behind the wheel, but digresses at times. The script is moving but could have been tighter had unnecessary and avoidable drama was removed.
The director aptly uses the digital clock highlighting the urgency and the shortage of time. The movie gains momentum when the car reaches Pune and has to cross a sensitive area. Even with flaws, the movie instills faith in humanity.
Delves Deeper Into Relationships
Stories of different relations -- parent and child, husband and wife, live-in – run parallel in the movie. At one end if there is a soured relation between actor Dev Kapoor (Prosenjit Chatterjee) and his 12-year-old daughter Riya, then at the other it is a close bond between Manoj Bajpayee and his daughter.
There is also a strained relation between Divya Dutta and Prosenjit over the actor's lack of time for his family. And the love blossoming between Rehan and Vishal Singh is equally interesting. The movie manages to portray the Hindu-Muslim unity in a beautiful way to allow the car reach the hospital sans any disruption.
