Actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader, Captain Vijayakanth, passed away at 71 in a private hospital in Chennai. The hospital confirmed his demise, stating that he had been on ventilator support due to pneumonia post his COVID-19 diagnosis. The news of Vijayakanth’s death led his fans and associates to mourn the loss and paid heartfelt tributes. Among those paying homage was Debina Bonnerjee, who shared her condolences on Instagram. For those not aware, Vijayakanth, was her first Tamil film co-star in the 2006 movie Perarasu. Debina shared several photos and videos with the late actor and remembered her time working with him, feeling proud of her first movie together.
Sharing her experience, the Ramayan actress wrote, “My first ever Tamil hero. What an experience to work with Sir in my first Tamil film Perarasu. Already a superstar ‘Captain’ is what we all called him as. He’s the one who kind of taught me punctuality and humanity. Always felt proud to do this film with Superstar Vijayakanth. Sad on hearing of his sudden demise. May your soul rest in peace, you were and will always be remembered for all the beautiful times and wise words truly a great leader. My condolences to all his close ones, fans and family.”

Apart from Vijayakanth and Debina Bonnerjee, Perarasu also stars Prakash Raj, Sarath Babu, Anandaraj, and Pandiarajan. Directed by Udhayan, the movie is an investigative thriller featuring CBI officer Kasi Viswanathan tasked with searching for the disappearance of Judge Sadhasivam. As the investigation progresses, Kasi comes to know that three corrupt policemen are behind the disappearance. However, the situation takes a dramatic turn when these individuals are murdered, connecting Kasi to the crimes.
As per reports, the late actor was hospitalized on Tuesday for a routine health examination. At that time, the DMDK party assured that Vijayakanth was in good health and would return home post-examinations. On the other hand, the hospital’s report indicated the presence of pneumonia. Earlier, on November 20, the DMDK leader was admitted to the hospital for treatment related to a respiratory issue.
Vijayakanth established the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in September 2005 and later held the position of Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from May 2011 to February 2016. During his tenure, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) twice, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. Before entering politics, he had a remarkable career in the Tamil film industry, as he was featured in 154 movies. Some of his films include Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Cooliekkaran, Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran, Senthoora Poove and Captain Prabhakaran.
