Mustard oil is a common cooking ingredient in numerous countries globally and is a staple in almost every Indian kitchen. In terms of production, India experienced a remarkable increase in mustard production in 2021, reaching a record of approximately 89.5 lakh tonnes. This figure reflects a substantial growth of about 19.33 per cent compared to the previous year. But do you know which country is the leading producer of mustard oil in the world? It is a small country and is part of the Indian subcontinent. You may find it hard to believe but our neighboring country Nepal is the highest producer of mustard oil and supplies it to the rest of the world.
According to FAOSTAT, 220,250 tonnes of mustard was produced in Nepal in 2021, which earned it the title of the highest mustard producer in the world. Nepal alone produces 41.3% of the total mustard produced in the world. From here mustard oil goes to many countries including India, Pakistan and China.
In terms of mustard production, Russia comes in second. 183,426 lakh tonnes of mustard are produced annually in Russia. Much of Europe receives shipments of mustard oil from here. Certain Asian nations also purchase mustard oil from Russia. The third position goes to Canada, which produces 161,781 tonnes of mustard. Placed fourth on this list is Malaysia, a global supplier of palm oil. There are 144,236 tonnes of mustard produced here. The USA, China, Myanmar and Ukraine are next on the list.
In Nepal, fossils of sea shells can be discovered at elevations of 3000 metres and above. The country boasts numerous world heritage sites, with Kathmandu alone hosting seven such sites within a 15-kilometer radius. Remarkably, over 92% of Nepal’s energy is sourced from hydroelectric plants. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that the Nepali name for Mount Everest is ‘Sagarmartha,’ translating to ‘Forehead of the Sky’.
