The Reliance Foundation Hospital on Monday received calls threatening Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and his family, following which the Mumbai Police launched an investigation, leading to the detention of a 56-year-old man.
At least eight calls were reportedly received from the number starting 10:45am. Hospital authorities filed a complaint at the DB Marg Police Station and the police put in motion the process to track the caller’s location.
Officials said a 56-year-old man named Vishnu Bhowmik has been detained from Dahisar suburb of Mumbai. The suspect has reportedly been taken to DB Marg Police Station.
In a statement, Dr Tarang Gianchandani, CEO, HN Reliance Hospital, said the calls were received soon after flag-hoisting ceremony at the hospital.
“As we concluded our flag hoisting ceremony at the hospital, that is when we got eight to nine calls from the same caller threatening our chairman between 10:45am till 12 noon. Right after, Mumbai police was alerted, FIR is being lodged and the team has begun investigations to understand further details of the caller," the statement said.
Police officials earlier on Monday said a preliminary enquiry suggested the caller was mentally unstable.
Sources told News18 that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed around the Ambani home, in addition to the increased presence of police and private security.
In February last year, an explosives-laden SUV was found parked outside ‘Antilia’, the residence of Mukesh Ambani and his family in Mumbai, leading to an ongoing NIA investigation.
In July this year, the Supreme Court had allowed the Centre to continue with the security cover for Ambani and his family members in Mumbai, quashing proceedings on a PIL on the matter before the Tripura High Court.
