New Delhi: DMK leader M K Alagiri has expressed his desire to resign as the Union Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister after the end of the monsoon session of the Parliament, sources have told CNN-IBN.
Sources say DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Karunanidhi has advised Alagiri, his elder son, to continue in Delhi for the time being and he has not yet decided on his wish to quit as Minister. This is to avoid Alagiri's possible confrontation with M K Stalin, his younger brother and Deputy Chief Minister of the state.
Karunanidhi has many times said that he has no plan to retire now and only the party has the authority to decide who its next leader will be. Alagiri, in response to his father's statements, has said he will contest for the party chief's post if an election is held for it.
“If there are elections in the party for the post of president I will contest for it. I agree with Karunanidhi's view that the leader should be elected democratically. I will only accept democratically elected leader," he said in April.
Alagiri has had modest success as a Minister in Delhi. The Opposition alleges he is "perpetually absent” from Parliament and hardly attends Cabinet meetings.
