BJP activists were angry over SC's order to probe Modi's role in 2002 riots.

Ahmedabad: Activists of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday allegedly attacked media persons and caused damage to their belongings in Ghatlodia area of Gandhinagar, the parliamentary constituency of the party's prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani.

The BJP activists were angry over India's apex court's directive to probe into role of Narendra Modi and others in post-Godhra communal riots.

The attack took place ahead of the arrival of Advani and the state Chief minister Narendra Modi.

Immediately after the attack media persons decided to boycott the rally and demanded an apology from the BJP leaders.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of India ordered a fresh probe into the role of Modi and 64 other accused persons in the post-Godhra riot cases that rocked the state in 2002.

The order was passed upon a plea filed by the wife of slain ex-lawmaker, Ehsan Jaffri and social activist Teesta Setalvad.

The court asked the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case along with the nine other cases and submit a report within three

months.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in Gujarat in a frenzy of reprisals after the Godhra incident, in which 59 Hindus were torched alive by suspected Muslims in a train carriage.

The Supreme Court had constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-investigate the post-Godhra communal riots.

With the five-phased elections underway, the fresh probe by the SIT into Modi's role in the riots could prove to be a setback for his party, BJP.
