Ranchi: The BJP on Monday withdrew support to the Shibu Soren-led government in Jharkhand, reducing it to a minority and plunging the state into another phase of uncertainty. Soren has been given a time of one week to prove his majority in the state Assembly by Governor MOH Farooq.
The BJP has a strength of 18 in the 81-member Assembly and the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) also has 18 members. The All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) has five members and the Janata Dal-United two.
Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Raghuvar Das gave Farooq a letter saying that his party was withdrawing support to the Soren government.
"I have handed over the letter of withdrawal of support to the Governor. When the Governor asked me about the signatures of party MLAs, I said I will collect them and hand them over by tomorrow (Tuesday)," Das told reporters at the Raj Bhavan.
The BJP decided to withdraw support to the state government after Soren announced that he would continue as the Chief Minister. The two parties had decided to hold the Chief Minister’s post in rotation--Soren was supposed to quit after 28 months and make way for a BJP leader.
The BJP on April 28 decided to withdraw support to the JMM government after Soren voted against the party-sponsored cut motion against the UPA government in Lok Sabha a day earlier. It then put its decision on hold after negotiations with Soren and his son.
