Denying Congress LoP post unjust: Rajeev Shukla
"Why should Congress stop talking about Leader of Opposition's post. This is grave injustice," said Rajeev Shukla.

Mumbai: Amid indications that Congress may not get the Leader of Opposition's post in Lok Sabha, senior party leader Rajeev Shukla on Saturday said it would amount to "injustice" and go against the "spirit" of the Supreme Court judgement.

"Why should Congress stop talking about Leader of Opposition's post. This is grave injustice. In a democracy, the opposition has certain rights. It (denying Congress LoP's post) is also against the spirit of the Supreme Court judgement as there is a role for the Leader of Opposition in making important appointments. It is not good for democracy," he told reporters.

In a setback to Congress' efforts to secure LoP's status for its leader in the House Mallikarjun Kharage, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has given an opinion to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan that the party's claim to the post was neither backed by tradition nor law.

About the communal clashes in Uttar Pradesh, Shukla, a former union minister, alleged there was an attempt by BJP and some other elements to create communal tension.

"BJP and some other elements are trying to create communal tension. Both the Centre and UP governments should be alert. They should sit together and try to defuse the situation," he said, adding any vitiation of the communal atmosphere would be detrimental to the country and society.
