Draft land acquisition bill by next week: sources
Jairam Ramesh, who is redrafting the land acquisition bill, is likely to place it for public debate early next week.

New Delhi: Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, who is redrafting the land acquisition bill cleared by his predecessor Vilasrao Deshmukh, is likely to place it for public debate early next week.

Asked whether the bill is ready, a ministry source said one more round of discussion will be held and the draft legislation is expected to be posted on the department's website early next week.

According to the sources, Ramesh is likely to hold a meeting with top officials involved in drafting the bill on Sunday after returning from Chhattisgarh. He is currently taking stock of the progress of flagship programmes of the ministry in Maoist-affected districts of the state.

The Minister will return from Chhattisgarh on Saturday evening and is likely to hold the meeting on Sunday just before leaving for Rajasthan, a source said.

Immediately after taking over the ministry last week, Ramesh decided to redraft the bill to incorporate recommendations by Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC).

The NAC recommends to integrate in one bill provisions for land acquisition and rehabilitation. Deshmukh had prepared two separate bills for land acquisition and rehabilitation.

Ramesh, however, has made it clear that he will come up with a separate rehabilitation and resettlement bill for large projects like power and irrigation.
