New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Saturday said that the judiciary must play an important role for the successful working of the Indian democracy.
"Indian democracy is the largest in the world and our judiciary has a pivotal role in its successful working," PTI quoted Chatterjee as saying at the concluding ceremony of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Alipore Court Bar Association in Kolkata.
"Lawyers should play a positive role in their day-to-day working for harmony between the judiciary and the legislature for the development of society," he added.
He also said that the members of the legal profession should work for making the judiciary more people-centric.
Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunshi called for a clear understanding between Parliament and judiciary because there has, of late, been some differences of opinion between the two pillars of democracy.
"This is required for healthy functioning of democracy," PTI quoted him as saying.
Referring to the historic background of the Alipore Bar Association, which was formed after setting up of the Alipore Chowki Court in 1857, Chatterjee said the court had played an important and glorious role in both pre and post-Independent India.
He also recalled his association with the court on several occasions.
