Chandigarh: Some Akali Dal workers on Wednesday allegedly damaged the control unit of EVM at the Bajwa Colony at Patiala and later banged the machine on the floor, officials said.
The Akali workers earlier uprooted the booth of Congress party and entered the polling booth and tried to take control over, officials said.
Congress MLA Brahm Mohindra and Rishma Kaur, daughter-in- law of union minister of state Preneet Kaur rushed to the spot and called upon the paramilitary force.
Meanwhile, police rounded up some persons. However, after a brief period the polling commenced. A report from Phagwara said that polling came to a halt at Booth No 166 in SD Model School for half an hour after the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) developed a technical snag.
Phagwara SDM-cum-Assistant Returning Officer Parminderpal Singh Sandhu rushed to the site with technical expert. The EVM was replaced and the polling resumed, giving relief to number of voters who had queued up outside the Booth.
Sandhu said three other EVMs were replaced at Booths numbers 104, 137 and 151 in Phagwara as these had also developed technical snags. Polling at these Booths halted for 10-15 minutes but resumed after the EVMs were replaced, said Sandhu. These booths were located in village Barna, local Guru Nanak Library and Sukhchain Nagar in Phagwara.
